PLAYER TIMEOUTS

Introducing a Tauihi League Innovation

The Tauihi League was proud to launch a game-changing feature for the 2023 season: the Player Timeout. This new rule gives players the power to make strategic calls on the court, accelerating the pace, excitement, and competitive edge of every Tauihi and Rapid league game.

What is the Player Timeout?

The Player Timeout allows players on the court to call one timeout per game, putting game-changing decision-making directly in their hands, not the coach’s.

How Does It Work?

  • Who can call it?
Any player on the court at the time of play, as long as they have possession of the ball.

  • When can it be used?
Anytime during live play, except the final 2 minutes of the fourth quarter or overtime.

  • How many per game?
    One per team, per game.

  • How is it called?
The player must signal a timeout using the standard “T” hand gesture, visible to referees.

Why Use a Player Timeout?

  • Escape Pressure: Call a timeout when trapped by defenders or running out of time on the shot clock.

  • Set the Play: Take control of the moment and organise a game-winning move.

  • Shift Momentum: Stop an opposing team’s run and refocus your squad instantly.

Why it’s a Game-Changer?

Tauihi’s Player Timeout is a global first, and New Zealand is leading the way. It brings:

  • More Player Agency: Athletes take control in the most crucial moments.

  • Faster Decisions: Timeouts can now happen in real-time—no need to wait on the bench.

  • More Drama for Fans: Adds a new layer of tension and excitement with every decision.

For Fans and the Future.

This game-like feature is designed not just for strategy, but for entertainment. Expect momentum swings, buzzer-beaters, and incredible leadership moments—all because a player made the call.

Tauihi continues to break new ground in professional basketball. The Player Timeout is just the beginning.
